These brilliant owl bookmarks with toggle tops mean you will never lose your place or your bookmark. These clever, brightly coloured owls really pop out against the black aida, while the brilliant toggle tops stop the bookmarks from slipping out of the book and getting lost.

Add your own touch and easily change the look of the bookmarks by using different colour combinations that match other items of your favourite shades.

Material you need

- two pieces of black aida, measuring 46 x 13 cm (18 x 5 in)

- threads as listed in the key

- size 24 tapestry needle

- toggles

- black sewing thread

- large-eyed needle

How to make the bookmarks

1 Fold a piece of aida in half so it measures 23 x 13 cm (9 x 5 in). The folded end is the top of the bookmark. Following the charts, start stitching the design approximately 2.5 cm (1 in) down from the fold. Make sure it’s central.

2 Trim the bookmark to the desired size, leaving at least four squares of fabric on each side of the design. Fray the sides up to two squares in, and then fray the bottom edge.

3 Cut approximately 30 cm (11¾ in) of thread in at least two of the colours used in the design. Make a cord by taping the edges of the thread onto a desk or worktop and twisting the different coloured threads tightly. Thread the toggle on and position at the halfway point of the threads. Fold the thread over, letting the toggle hang and the threads twist together.

4 Thread a large-eyed needle with both ends of the cord, ensuring that it does not untwist. Insert the needle in through the top of the bookmark (at the folded edge) at the centre point. Adjust the cord to desired length. Knot tightly on the back.

5 To finish, sew the side edges of the bookmark together.

Tip: You can easily alter the size of the bookmarks to use up any remnants of aida in your stash – just make sure the design is always centred.
